Welcome to GCC TRAIN Fall 2023!

Lab hours are M, T, W, TH 1-5 pm and F 9-1 pm.

1. Lab experience

This option will provide real laboratory experience and skills. You will work on a current research project(s). 

This option requires your presence in the lab, a laboratory notebook in which you take notes on literally everything you do, and then write a 3-paragraph (roughly page-long) blog about your experience every week.

2. Database intensive

This option will provide experience in which you will learn how to leverage freely available data and learn how to apply that knowledge to build your own research project. For you computing guys, this may be useful in that you will become comfortable with numerous databases which could easily be applied to building user-friendly data interfaces in the future. 

This project has specific weekly assignments that you will submit to the blog. Please see the attachment for all of your assignments. PLEASE NOTE: if you have completed this database-intensive in a previous semester, you must choose a different option as you've already completed these assignments. 

3. Personal research 

This option allows you to choose your own topic of investigation. 

You will be required to read a research article of your choosing and either blog a 3- paragraph (roughly page-long) summary of the research OR if it’s computational-based— apply your newfound knowledge. For example, you could choose a research article about a new software package and then use the software package and blog about the results. I’m thinking along the lines of using Bioconductor packages to analyze data in R, but that’s just where my experience lies— you are certainly not limited to that. Many software packages include example data for you to use. If the software package does not include data- I can provide you with some but understand that all the data that I possess is biology-based. If you have different ideas about personal research, feel free to reach out to me and we can try to make it work.
